Iowa, A Place to Grow

Dear Family & Friends:
Transfer calls come today, and we have not heard yet what will happen. Everyone we talk to is split about 50/50 as to whether or not I am staying or leaving.  So I guess in a few hours we will probably know.

So the other Sunday two members of our ward came to church and so the AP's had asked if we had visited them that week and if that was why they had come to church.  But Sister Brown and I hadn't, and neither had the AP's so we didn't know what motivated them to come to church that day.  This past Monday we had dinner with the Pett's and Sister Pett, who is the Activity Days leader (activities during the week for girls ages 8-11), she had said that they have kept encouraging the girls to bring their families to church.  So mystery solved, because of the influence of a good leader!  Also, that evening Brother Pett asked us if we knew a particular member in the ward.  This sister we have been trying to meet with, but it just hasn't worked out.  Anyways, the next day we decided to contact the mom to see if we could come over and we were able to set up an appointment and come over on Wednesday!

The Mission Office
Another highlight from Monday was that once again we were able to be the Des Moines Hotel, for Sister Stephens who had came to Des Moines in the June 5th group with me, but who just got her visa for Brazil.  She spent the night with us and then flew out to Brazil on Tuesday!

Tuesday was a long day where everything besides our dinner appointment with Sister Strayer was cancelled.  But I love dinner appointments, because it is one thing that most likely won't get cancelled, and so you have it to look forward to, on the days that nothing else seems to be going your way.

On Wednesday we were able to go on exchanges with the Hermanas, but it was a little bit different, because we were late getting started, and one of the Hermanas had an appointment so at first, Sister Brown and I were able to go with Hermana Phelps and visit two of the members of the Spanish branch.  Haha it was funny because we were taking our car, so I was driving over to the members home, and as we were about there, it just dawned on Hermana Phelps that she hadn't given me the address and I wasn't using a GPS.  haha the next sister in the Spanish branch that we visited ended up sending us home with like 5 grocery bags full of food. After the two appointments the other 2 Hermanas met up with us and so Sister Brown went with the Sister training leaders, Hermanas Phelps and Howell,  while Hermana Hunter came with me and worked in my area.  That evening we were able to visit Holly who is the one that Brother Pett had talked about on Monday. It was great because she has a 13 year old daughter that we were able to invite to come to girls camp this summer, and hopefully we'll be able to start teaching her daughter!

We ended exchanges Wednesday night, because Sister Brown and I had district meeting early on Thursday.  So it was a short exchange, but it is always fun to learn from other missionaries!

Helping at the Iowa Games
Thursday and Friday were great!  Saturday was even better though!  It was Sister Brown's 10th Click day and our zone was able to help out with the Iowa Games here in Des Moines, which are 3 on 3 basketball tournaments.  We helped from 8:30 am - 3:00 p.m.  and none of us thought to put on sunscreen.  So basically all missionaries in Des Moines can be identified because we all look like lobsters.  haha I think each of us hit up a store on our way home to get some aloe vera.  But other than the sunburn it was so fun to be able to help out.  Each companionship was in charge of a court and kept the scoreboard/books.

Sunday you can't help but love the Des Moines ward.  We had fast and testimony meeting and so we had some African chants/singing over the pulpit that took place, for a little bit, but then Bishop is so great and so near the end of the meeting he spoke and reminded of the commission to teach all nations, kindred, tongue, and people.  And how we probably won't find another ward quite like the Des Moines ward, throughout the world.  But he asked what are we to expect when we combine cultures and nations with the gospel?  He said that we are going to have adjustment periods how each of us need to help one another to use the strengths that we all have, and find a balance. Because it is the gospel that will unite all nations, kindred, tongue, and people!

Well update on Gary. We still have not been able to catch up with him, and it is so frustrating, because he never was like this during the entire teaching process. I am worried sick, and kind of know to a little extent how parents must feel when their kids cause them to worry.  Ha, ha, but at the same time I want to kick Gary in the butt for making us worry.  So hopefully nothing too bad has happened. So please keep him in your prayers!

I love you all and hope you have a great week!

Love, Sister Call

P.S.

The weather was spring weather this past week.  We got quite a bit of rain during the beginning of the week.  I think someone said around 4 1/2 inches.  It hasn't been hot yet, because like on Saturday it was really windy, so that is part of the reason we didn't realize we were getting burnt.  But I am enjoying the spring weather, but I am not looking forward to the heat of the summer, because that is just miserable.
